Blog Post #8: Notebook Entries

The first type of notebook entry that I am going to cover is "Reaching into Memory."  This style of notebook entry is when the writer just starts writing what comes to their mind from the past.  The writer is explaining their memories.  Positive and negative memories could be explained by the writer.  I chose this specific type of notebook entry because when students get to middle school they have many memories about Math and how they have experienced Math in school.  In my content area of Math, I can have students write in their notebooks what comes to their mind from the past when I mention a specific vocabulary word or way to approach a problem.  If I am introducing a new, complex topic I could have students "reach into their memory" and write about what they know about the new topic.  Writing is useful in Math class.     The second type of notebook entry that I want to mention is "Thinking in Words."  This type o...

Blog Post #7: Slice of Life in the Rain

The clouds are gray and it is still a little dark outside even though the sun should be coming up.  The lightning flashes across the sky and I am reminded of Spring Showers.  Rain drops begin to hit my jacket and face and I walk faster.  I think to myself that there will soon be lots of flowers coming up!

Blog Post #6: Ground Zero BHH Strategy

For Book Club #2 I read Ground Zero by Alan Gratz.  This book followed two different story lines, one that focused on Brandon on September 11, 2001, who was visiting his Father in New York City at work at the World Trade Center, and the other story line is focused on Reshmina who was living in Afghanistan on September 11, 2019.       The story about Brandon focuses on his attempt to escape the World Trade Center during the tragic events of September 11, 2001.  The story focused around Reshmina centers on her efforts to help an injured American soldier.  The author wants me to know that both characters were very strong-minded people.  What surprised me as the book went on was I found out that the American soldier that Reshmina was helping was actually Brandon after Brandon had become older.  What I noticed in my head was that during the course of the story the author gave some hints that Brandon and the American soldier wer...

Blog Post #5: Reading as Thinking

When I am reading how I see is in color in my mind's eye.  I visualize in my mind's eye like a movie and it is like I am watching a movie in my mind.  The kinds of things that are easier to see in my mind include when I am reading about actual people or characters because I can think about them in my mind and create a movie in my mind.  I hear what I am reading in my mind just like I hear dialogue in real life or in a movie.  I picture characters like real people in movies and I think about how the characters sound when they talk and what they look like.  When I am reading I respond to confusion by reading over what I did not understand and by reading it slowly.     I experience a variety of feelings when I am reading depending on what I am reading.  I experience positive and negative feelings, just like I do in the real world.  During reading I am able to connect ideas to previous texts that I have read and compare the b...

Blog Post #4: Questions to Explore Reading Lives

The current books that I am reading include my textbooks for my college classes and the textbooks for the classes that I teach.  These books travel around in the main section of my backpack and the additional bag that I carry.  The regular sections of my day are the time before school, during school when I am teaching, and after school.  I could have time for reading appointments before and after school.  The possible places for reading for me are my classroom at school and the table that I study at in my home.  I read for school and study in both places, but I only read for enjoyment at home.  The challenges about reading in my classroom is that I only read before and after school when I am not teaching.  The challenges about reading at home is that there is usually background noise.     The other students in my college classes know what I am reading right now because we are reading the same textbooks.  I talk to th...

Blog Post #3: Slice of Life Sunny Day

As I walked outside today I really noticed how the sun was shining and what a beautiful day it was!  The past few days have been cold for Southeast Texas, and today it was a great day with the sun shining and the 60 degree weather.  I think it is important for us to take time out of our day and appreciate the little things in life like the beautiful weather, our family, and our friends.  If someone chooses to participate in the Slice of Life Challenge and they cannot think of something to write about for that day, they can always write about how the weather is.     I have been busy with teaching and my Master's classes, so today I decided to take time and appreciate the beautiful weather outside today.  Even if it was just a slice of my life, I believe it is still important.  Sometimes the small moments are important to recognize.

Blog Post #2: Literacy Experiences during my Secondary School Years

My literacy experiences during my secondary school years were sometimes positive and sometimes negative.  They were positive when I was able to follow what the author was writing and relate to the story in English class or the history literature in History class.  It is important to note that there is a lot of literacy involved in Science and Math class.  Since I am a Math teacher and Math was always my favorite subject throughout school, I will say that my Math textbooks and especially my Algebra textbook from 8th Grade impacted me most during my secondary school years.  My 8th Grade Algebra teacher impacted me most during this time because she encouraged me to understand that students should study and "read" their Math textbooks just like they read other textbooks.     My 8th Grade Algebra teacher also helped me to realize that textbooks are important to read and study to have success in classes.  This helped me throughout my hig...
